At what VIX level does VixShield pause new conservative iron condors? Is a reading of 17.95 still considered safe according to the VIX Risk Scaling guidelines?
VIX Risk Scaling Iron Condor Tiers Volatility Thresholds ALVH Protection SPX Mastery Rules
VixShield Answer
At VixShield we follow a clearly defined VIX Risk Scaling framework developed by Russell Clark as part of the SPX Mastery methodology. This system governs when and at what tier we place our 1DTE SPX Iron Condors. The Conservative tier, which targets approximately $0.70 credit and maintains an approximate 90 percent win rate, remains active up to but not including a VIX level of 20. We pause all new Conservative iron condors once VIX reaches or exceeds 20. At the current VIX spot of 17.95, which sits comfortably below the 20 threshold and 9.5 percent below its five-day moving average of 18.58, the environment remains favorable for Conservative placements. This reading also aligns with a strong contango regime as shown by our Contango Indicator, supporting premium collection without elevated fear. Our VIX Risk Scaling rules are straightforward: when VIX stays below 15 all three tiers including Aggressive are available and we often refresh the ALVH hedge. Between 15 and 20 we limit activity to Conservative and Balanced tiers only. Above 20 we enter full HOLD mode, placing no new iron condors while allowing the existing ALVH Adaptive Layered VIX Hedge to remain fully active across its three layers. The ALVH itself uses a 4/4/2 contract ratio of short, medium, and long-dated VIX calls and continues to protect the portfolio regardless of the VIX level once opened. Strike selection at 3:10 PM CST each market day relies on our EDR Expected Daily Range indicator combined with RSAi Rapid Skew AI to match the precise credit target for the chosen tier. This disciplined scaling prevents overexposure during rising volatility and allows the Theta Time Shift mechanism to handle any threatened positions without stop losses or active management. The current 17.95 VIX therefore remains well within safe parameters for Conservative iron condors under our rules. All trading involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors. 💬 Community Pulse
Community traders often approach VIX-based risk scaling with a mix of caution and curiosity, frequently asking exactly where the line sits between acceptable volatility and a full pause. A common misconception is that any reading above 15 immediately restricts all activity, whereas the methodology actually permits Conservative iron condors up to but not including 20. Discussions highlight appreciation for the clarity of tiered gates tied to both VIX and the EDR indicator, with many noting how the current 17.95 level paired with contango supports continued placement. Participants also emphasize the value of the ALVH hedge remaining active across all regimes, viewing it as the true portfolio stabilizer rather than discretionary adjustments. Overall the conversation reflects a desire for precise, rules-based boundaries that align with the set-and-forget philosophy while protecting against volatility expansion.
