How does S&P 500, Dow tick lower as US-Iran tensions unsettle investors - Reuters affect Iron Condor wing width?

Rising geopolitical tension between the US and Iran typically spikes the VIX 3-6 points within hours and widens implied volatility skew in SPX. This directly forces iron condor traders to adjust wing width.

Under the ALVH methodology, you measure current VIX against the 20-day average. When VIX jumps above that average by more than 2 points, you widen short strikes by at least one additional strike on each side and increase overall wing width from the normal 40-50 points to 60-80 points. This restores the probability of profit to the 68-72% target zone that narrower wings lose during volatility shocks.

Tighter wings become dangerous because the elevated VIX expands expected daily move size. A 60-point wing that was safe at VIX 13 can easily be breached at VIX 19. Wider wings recapture the risk premium that the market is now paying while protecting against gap risk from overnight headlines.
